Vidler’s 5 & 10: An Old-Fashioned Family Shopping Experience
Located in the quaint village of East Aurora, about 20 miles south of Buffalo, NY, Vidler’s 5 & 10 is a store where families can step back in time and enjoy shopping like grandma or even great-grandma experienced. Founded in 1930 by Robert Vidler Sr. and currently run by the third generation of the family, they claim to be the largest 5 & 10 variety store in the world.
The distinctive red and white stripped awning and the large “Vidler on the Roof” make the store stand out on East Aurora’s historic
Main Street
. Step inside and you’ll hear the creak of the original, worn wooden floor as fellow shoppers browse through over 75,000 different items on two levels. One can easily spend several hours here.
Kids can enjoy a ride on Sandy, the mechanical horse, and then munch on popcorn, that’s only ten cents a bag. Then they can browse through a variety of ageless toys, like yo-yo’s, puzzles, board games, and more. Vidler’s original candy counter features old-time favorites like rock candy, mallo cups, and locally made Crystal Beach suckers.
Parents can peruse through a huge assortment of unique kitchen and household items, home décor, specialty foods, bath and body, and gift items. Creative types will appreciate the large selection of craft supplies, fabrics, and yarn.
As a nod to modern times, they have a Facebook page, a YouTube channel and one can even buy many of their offering online. However, you’ll miss the ambience, charm, and old-fashioned customer service that Vidler’s is noted for.
