Check out these craft shows for holiday shopping

Forever Young Magazine
November 2012

Area craft shows, taking place in November and December, offer a unique holiday shopping experience, with items crafted by local and regional artisans. Highlighted in this article are just a few shows; the first two are huge events, with crafters coming from all over the country, while other shows feature mostly locally-based crafters. Check your local newspapers throughout November and December for more shows in our area. See related article on page __  which highlights area stores that carry locally crafted items, not only at the holidays, but year-round as well.

Christmas in the Country, November 1-4, Thursday and Friday 10am-9pm, Saturday 9am-6pm, Sunday 10am-5pm. Hamburg Fairgrounds, 5600 McKinley Pkwy, Hamburg, www.wnypremierpromotions.com Tickets are $6/advanced, $8/at door.

This event, in its 28th year, is not merely a craft show, but a four day holiday extravaganza. Produced by Premier Promotions, the show takes place in four buildings at the Fairgrounds. Featured are over 400 artists from around the United States and Canada, with hand-crafted items for the home, gourmet foods, bath and beauty products, jewelry, candles, and more. It has been recognized as the #1 contemporary and classic artisan market in the nation by Sunshine Artist magazine. Over 60,000 people attend over the course of the four days.

Yuletide in the Country, December 1-2, 10am-5pm each day, Hamburg Fairgrounds, 5600 McKinley Pkwy, Hamburg, www.wnypremierpromotions.com. Tickets are $3/advance, $5/at door. This show, also produced by Premier Promotions, was created for shoppers who missed the Christmas in the Country event and for those who prefer to do their shopping closer to the holidays. It features about 200 artisans with traditional crafts, fine art, pottery, jewelry, home décor, gourmet foods, and more.

Unlike the two previous events featuring many national and regional artisans who travel the country with their wares, the following shows feature local artisans who may only participate in a handful of shows at the holidays.

One local artisan, Bob Zeeb, 80, of Amherst, has been creating stained glass items and kaleidoscopes since he retired in 1995. Zeeb had taken a course in making stained glass prior to his retirement and really enjoyed making the stained glass pieces; however, he began making more items than he could possibly give away to friends and family. “I decided to make some money by selling some of the items,” said Zeeb. He added, “I do about five shows a years; mostly at the holidays.”  Zeeb’s most popular items are his stained glass angel pins and necklaces, as well as his stained glass kaleidoscopes. He also makes jewelry boxes, picture frames, sun catchers, and ornaments.

St. Gregory the Great Craft Show, November 23 & 24,
200 St. Gregory Court
, Williamsville (next to Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital). This annual event has a variety of items displayed in two buildings on the parish campus. There is always a nice selection to choose from, including jewelry, painted items, quilts, toys, and gourmet foods, to name a few.

Holiday Craft Show Williamsville PTSA, December 1 & 2, 10 am-4 pm, Heim Middle and Elementary Schools,
175 Heim Road
, Williamsville.  This show, in its 37th year, is the only fundraiser of the Williamsville PTSA, with proceeds going to the scholarship fund for graduating seniors. Over 140 crafters display a variety of items in two buildings.

Local Author’s Book Signing November 24, 12-2 pm. Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society, 25 Nottingham Court, Buffalo, www.bechs.org   Since writing can be considered a craft, stop by the historical society and meet over 20 local authors, whose books are available for purchase in the museum’s gift shop. Books make a wonderful holiday gift.
