Enjoy a spa getaway at the Salt Sanctuary

Longweekends Magazine

Fall/Winter 2014

Enjoy a unique spa getaway with your mother, daughter, sister, or BFF at the Salt Sanctuary in Binghamton, NY, located about 4 hours southeast of Buffalo. The spa, located in the Traditions at the Glen Resort, is the only salt spa in upstate New York. The main building, built in 1919 as a private residence, was later a country club and then a retreat facility before being transformed into a resort ten years ago.
Salt therapy, also known as halotherapy, is a centuries-old European tradition that just recently made its way into the United States. Salt therapy, which is 100% natural, is helpful to people with respiratory illnesses, as well as a spa treatment that promotes relaxation and rejuvenation.
In the salt “cave”, a large room that looks like a cave with walls and floors of salt and strategically stacked blocks of salt, a machine disperses microscopic salt particles into the air. These particles enter the airway, which helps eliminate infection, as well as promotes relaxation. Clients reclining on the chairs in the salt cave often doze off during the 50-minute session. The spa also has a salt room with salt box toys, especially suited for children since salt therapy is a popular treatment for children with asthma.
Traditional spa treatments are offered at the resort, including facials, massages, manicures, and pedicures. In addition, hotel guests get a 50% discount on salt therapy and can enjoy several loop hiking trails in the 200 acre glen located behind the hotel.
