Cruising Along the Historic Erie Canal
Longweekends
Spring Summer 2014
What better way to learn about Erie Canal history than taking a two-hour narrated cruise along that historic waterway. Captain Mike Murphy and his crew at Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises will take you on a journey that includes “locking through” the 50 foot long Locks 34 and 35, the only set of double locks on the entire canal. You will also have the opportunity to view the remnants of the original “Flight of Five” locks, which were Lockport’s claim to fame when the canal opened in 1825. These locks are currently in the first phase of a multi-million dollar restoration project, that when done, will restore the locks to their original appearance.
As a matter of fact, Lockport got its name from this impressive set of locks. These original locks, a twin set of step locks with five levels, allowed simultaneous travel in both directions as canal traffic climbed and descended the 59-foot Niagara Escarpment. Modern Locks 34 & 35, which replaced one side of the Flight of Five in the early 20th century, now allows pleasure boats, like Captain Murphy’s vessels, to travel the canal from May to October.
Your cruise along the canal also takes you under the “Big Bridge.” Built in 1914, it is the widest bridge in the world, measuring 399 feet wide. After your cruise enjoy a meal in their Canalside Café &Pub and browse through their gift shop stocked with Erie Canal and Lockport themed merchandise. They also have a banquet facility, which is popular for wedding receptions, showers, and other private parties.
