Here's what others are saying

This month, an impressive regional resource sure to be of interest to Buffalonians, current and expatriate alike, as well as travelers to the upstate region, hits bookstore shelves: "Western New York: An Explorer's Guide. This thick, information-packed volume, presented as an updated second edtion, is published by the Countryman Press, a division of W.W. Norton and is the work of local writer, Christine A. Smyczynski.

The guide totals 608 pages and sells for $21.95 in bookstores and online. Besides a town-by-town guide to the best places to eat, sleep, shop and tour in Western New York, the well-designed paperback guide includes 17 maps, more than 100 photographs and brief histories of various inportant spots in the Buffalo Niagara area.

Seasonal calendars of events and festivals, recommendations for the most family-friendly sites and eateries, and listings of the best amusement parks, nightclubs, fish fry diners and more-this book covers the territory throughly. A great find for people new to the area, and longtime residents as well.
Charity Vogel, News book reviewer, The Buffalo News June 29, 2008.

Congratulations on your book! I have gone through several sections of it and it is terrific. It will be a great help to me personally in understanding the region better and will definitely come in handy for the bed and breakfast business; it will be a great help to guests.
Peter Dunlop, Innkeeper, The Lilacs Bed & Breakfast, East Aurora,

Whether you've got out-of-town guests or you're up for a little day tripping yourself, the well organized tome is a godsend. Entries are lively, opinionated and utterly readable.
Buffalo Spree Magazine,September-October 2005.

This book is an invaluable thumb-through resource for area explorers. This is the book to have readily at hand on home countertop or as a permanent passenger in your vehicle.
Western New York Heritage Magazine, Fall 2005.

This (book) is an ideal resource for a traveler on a short visit or extended stay, for those with businesses that cater to tourists, and locals who want to vacation in their own backyards. History buffs will enjoy the attention to historical background. It would be a terrific addition to any library in the 13 counties it covers.
Life in the Finger Lakes,

An Explorer's Guide: Western New York (The Countryman Press, Woodstock, Vermont) -- the first comprehensive travel guide to Western New York and Southern Ontario – is loaded with information covering Niagara Falls and Southern Ontario to the Western Edge of the Finger Lakes. Author Christine A. Smyczynski has done an amazing job detailing the history surrounding each area and describes Western New York as the Empire State's "open secret."

This 655-page guide includes opinionated listings of inns, B&Bs, hotels, vacation cottages, and campgrounds, plus hundreds of dining recommendations. Also included are up-to-date regional and downtown maps; an alphabetical "What's Where" subject guide to aid in trip planning; and handy icons that point out places of extra value, family- and pet-friendly establishments, wheelchair access and popular wedding venues.

Historians will enjoy information on the Erie Canal, the famous five stair-step locks that carried the canal over the Niagara Escarpment at Lockport – still preserved near the Erie Canal Museum and lots more. Venture into either Buffalo or Rochester, and discover what to do there, thanks to Smyczynski's excellent research. Arline Zatz, Travelworldmagazine.com,January/ February 2007
