Today is National Plan for Vacation Day. Established in 2017, it happens every year on the last Tuesday in January. Since people are experiencing winter burnout and may be daydreaming about taking a vacation, it’s the perfect time to look ahead and plan your trips for the coming year. For more information about this holiday see https://holidaytoday.org/national-plan-for-vacation-day/
The New York State Tourism Industry Association (NYSTIA), which I’m a member of, recently had a webinar about a new campaign, “Take Off New York,” which encourages people who work in New York and surrounding states to use their paid time off to vacation in New York State.
Apparently 25% of workers let their PTO expire, as many companies don’t carry it over from year to year. Some people feel guilty about taking time off, but they really shouldn’t, as they usually are more productive and energized when they come back to work after taking a break. Others let those days go unused since they lack clear travel plans and are unsure of where to go.
Even if you can’t take a long two-week vacation, you can still arrange to take shorter trips, perhaps over a long weekend. There are many great things to see and do throughout New York State all year long. Need some ideas? Take a look around my website www.christinesmyczynski.com as I have a number of articles posted about things to see and do in New York State and beyond. You can also check out my latest book, Backroads and Byways of Upstate New York, which gives an overview of twenty different areas of the state to visit.
