Today is National Plan for Vacation Day!

Today is National Plan for Vacation Day. Established in 2017, it happens every year on the last Tuesday in January. Since people are experiencing winter burnout and may be daydreaming about taking a vacation, it’s the perfect time to look ahead and plan your trips for the coming year. For more information about this holiday see https://holidaytoday.org/national-plan-for-vacation-day/

The New York State Tourism Industry Association (NYSTIA), which I’m a member of, recently had a webinar about a new campaign, “Take Off New York,” which encourages people who work in New York and surrounding states to use their paid time off to vacation in New York State.

Apparently 25% of workers let their PTO expire, as many companies don’t carry it over from year to year. Some people feel guilty about taking time off, but they really shouldn’t, as they usually are more productive and energized when they come back to work after taking a break. Others let those days go unused since they lack clear travel plans and are unsure of where to go.

Even if you can’t take a long two-week vacation, you can still arrange to take shorter trips, perhaps over a long weekend. There are many great things to see and do throughout New York State all year long. Need some ideas? Take a look around my website www.christinesmyczynski.com as I have a number of articles posted about things to see and do in New York State and beyond. You can also check out my latest book, Backroads and Byways of Upstate New York, which gives an overview of twenty different areas of the state to visit.

Books written by local authors make a great holiday gift!

If you are looking for some last-minute gift ideas, consider giving books written by Buffalo and Western New York authors. Now I’m not just saying this because I’m a local author (of course I’ll be thrilled if you purchase my latest book!)

There are numerous Buffalo area authors who write in a variety of genre, so there really is something for everyone. Some of these authors, myself included, sell our books through Amazon and traditional bookstores, while others may sell through their own websites.

Here’s just a sampling of some area authors who I personally know and have read some of their books:

Rick Falkowski (local history) https://buffalomusichistory.com

Alison Stone (romance novels) www.alisonstone.com

Mason Winfield (supernatural historian) www.masonwinfield.com

Lorna MacDonald Czarnota (historical books and novels) www.storyhavenstudio.com

Father Bill Quinlivan (religious themed books and music CD’s) www.frbillsings.com

Elizabeth Licata 100 things to do in Buffalo before you die www.amazon.com

Mark Donnelly (numerous books with local themes, both fiction, non-fiction and children’s books) also has a publishing company (Rock Paper Safety Scissors), which has published books for other local authors www.rpsspublishing.com

There are many other Western New York and New York State authors, so be sure to check out the local author section when you visit bookstores in your community.

A visit to the Marilla Country Store

Since I'm working on a short article about the Marilla Country Store for the January/February issue of Buffalo Spree, I thought it would be a good idea to visit the store as I haven't been there for a few years.  This turned out to be the perfect weekend to go, as they are having their annual holiday open house. My daughter and I actually behaved ourselves and didn't buy too much, mostly candy and treats. And I even ran into a friend of mine who I haven't seen in years!

The store will be celebrating 175 years of business in 2026! Check out their website for more information about the store.

Book Review
by Tom Tarapacki

Backroads & Byways of Upstate New York: Drives, Day Trips, and Weekend Excursions; Countryman Press; 360 pages by Christine Smyczynski
There’s a lot of New York State between Buffalo and New York City, and Christine Smyczynski sure knows her way around it. Whether it’s the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, the historic estates of the Hudson Valley, Boldt Castle in Thousand Islands, or the Chautauqua Institution, this book takes you to some memorable sites in the state. It provides updated, practical information that will be invaluable in your travel through the wonders of Upstate New York. Some of the locations are very well known, while others you may be hearing about for the first time. Some are easy to find, while others are well off the beaten path.

This well-organized and updated book is broken down into 20 road trips driving through specific geographic areas. Each one begins with a summary that includes estimated lengths, estimated time of travel, highlights and how to get there. That is followed by details and photographs of the routes.
For example, the first one is Route 104: The Cobblestone Trail, which guides you from Lewiston to Rochester. Artpark, Our Lady of the Fatima Shrine, local vineyards and wine trails, markets, and the like are highlighted. You get specific recommendations on lodgings, attractions, shopping, complete with addresses and phone numbers. You can choose to traverse the entire route, or simply pick out certain attractions you’d like to visit.

One of my favorite routes in the book is the Letchworth Region. It includes, of course, the magnificent Letchworth State Park. Among the highlights there, along with the waterfalls and other natural features, are the Glen Iris Inn and its restaurant, Caroline’s. The park also boasts the outstanding Humphrey Nature Center and the Letchworth Museum. The book includes some of the attractions in the communities surrounding the park.

A couple of small but interesting sites in Mount Morris are the Pantry Mouse Tea House and Wendy’s Pantry, which sells old-fashioned candies, spices and gourmet foods. There are some I haven’t visited but sound interesting: The Abbey of the Genesee and the National Warplane Museum.

There are a lot of lesser-known gems. Many people have visited the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, but many are unaware of the nearby Glimmerglass State Park. The 800-acre park is a great place to hike, and includes Hyde Hall, a National Historic Landmark from the early 1800s that is one of the finest examples of a Neoclassical country house.

Another good route is Western New York’s Amish Community. It includes some hard-to-find information about the unique merchants. More than that, it delves into the origins and philosophy of this religious group, explaining why the Amish don’t ride in cars or use telephones. It also includes some valuable insights about the customs and practices of the Amish community that outsiders should be aware of. The author provides information on how to arrange for a personalized tour of the shops, just in case you feel uncomfortable visiting them on your own.

There are many pictures and maps included. Unlike some books of this kind, this one includes a detailed index. That makes it very easy to quickly look up a specific location.
Christine Smyczynski is a native Western New Yorker who has written hundreds of articles about the region and New York State. She has been published in many local, regional and national publications, including The Buffalo News, Forever Young Magazine, Western New York Family, Longweekends, and many others. She has written five books, all pertaining to New York State travel, including Explorer's Guide to Buffalo & Niagara Falls. She lives in the Buffalo area with her husband.

Backroads and Byways of Upstate NY

Do you like taking road trips and discovering hidden gems off the beaten trail? Do you like sampling local cuisine, learning about local history and connecting to nature? My most recent book, the second edition of Backroads and Byways of Upstate New York, offers travel ideas that highlight off-the-beaten path attractions in New York State.

In this book, which was released July 8, I’ve tried to include something for everyone; history buffs, shoppers, outdoor enthusiasts, families with kids and everyone who wants to learn more about New York State and create lasting memories with their families through travel and exploration of some of the state’s hidden treasurers.

Each one of the book’s twenty chapters offers an overview of easy-to-follow travel information and a suggested route to follow. In writing his book I wanted to provide a reliable resource for an authentic travel experience in the state.

Some routes have a specific theme, such as a wine trail, barn quilts or murals, while other routes have a variety of attractions along the way. The beginning of each chapter highlights the basics of each drive, such as estimated travel time and mileage and an overview of what you will see along the way.

Some chapters highlight places that will just take you a few hours to explore, while places in other chapters may require several days for you to fully explore the places along the way.

The book, which sells for $24.99, is available in book stores, some museum and gift shops, and on Amazon and other online book retailers. For more information visit my website www.christinesmyczynski.com

I will be participating in a local author book signing tomorrow, Saturday July 12, from 2-5 at BestCellar Book Bar, 9560 Main Street, Clarence, NY www.bestcellarbookbar.com
